Malaysia is aiming to strengthen its position as a regional artificial intelligence (AI) hub through the upcoming National AI Action Plan 2026–2030, currently being drafted by the National Artificial Intelligence Office (NAIO).

Digital Minister Gobind Singh Deo told the Dewan Rakyat that the country is committed to improving its global standing, citing Malaysia’s current position of 26th out of 36 countries in the Stanford HAI AI Index (2023) and 24th out of 193 in the Oxford Insights Government AI Readiness Index (2024). He said more efforts are being made to improve these rankings.

“The government has already implemented several large-scale initiatives to boost workforce readiness for AI technologies,” he said in response to a question by MP Batu Gajah Sivakumar Varatharaju Naidu on the nation’s preparedness for the AI wave, including technology transfer strategies, local talent development and AI integration across governance and economic sectors.

Among the flagship programmes is ‘AI for My Future’, a collaboration with Microsoft targeting nearly 800,000 Malaysians via interactive modules and guided training.

Gobind added that initiatives such as ‘MyDigital Maker’ and ‘Cikgu Juara Digital’ by the Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation (MDEC) are helping to equip students and educators with digital skills like robotics and data analytics at the school level.

On the civil service front, he highlighted the ‘AI@Work’ initiative with Google, which aims to train 445,000 public servants in using AI tools such as Gemini and Notebook LLM to improve government efficiency.

Touching on regulatory frameworks, Gobind said the government is also considering a dedicated AI law to balance governance needs with Malaysia’s ambitions as a regional AI leader.
